Of
the many sermons Christ give. The one Jesus taught here is known as
“The Beatitudes”
A Study Of Matthew
Chapter 5
I believe the first to hear the Beatitudes bore in their
hearts the
memory of another mountain – Mount Sinai.
Where God spoke and gave to Moses the Law. In {Ex 31:18}
Of these two mountains – Mount Sinai and the Mount of the Beatitudes
One the Ten Commandments, the other Eight Beatitudes.
Together they mark the path of following Christ and the road to
spiritual maturity and freedom.
The Ten Commandments “The Law” in part seem negative:
In {Ex 20:3, 13-16} Paraphrased,
God says:
“Have no false gods before me; and things like- do not kill, do not
commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness...”
Fact is they are supremely positive.
Pointing to the first and greatest
of the attributes. “Love” for God is Love {1 John 4:8}
In {Mt 22:37, 39} Paraphrased,
Jesus say’s:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your
mind. And Love your neighbour as yourself.”
In {Mt 5:3-12} ( Reads, the eight beatitudes or atitude of being.)
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
2. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
3. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
4. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after
righteousness: for they shall be filled.
5. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
6. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
7. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the
children of God.
8. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- - - -
Blessed are ye, when men shall
revile you, and persecute you,
and shall say all manner of evil against
you falsely, for my sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding
glad: for great is your reward in heaven:
for so persecuted they the
prophets which were before you.
Note that # 8 is doubly blessed.
{Mt 5:13-16} Paraphrased,
Jesus says we are the Salt & Light onto this world.
That we are not to lose are savour nor hide our light.
( But to be bold, that we may Glorify our Father in Heaven.)
{Mt 5:17-20} Paraphrased,
Jesus say that he did not come to destory the law, but to fulfil.
He walked perfect in them - Being our spotless sacrifice to God.
( We are not bound to the Law, yet we are to leave up to them.)
{Mt 5:21-26} Paraphrased,
Jesus shares that it's a heart and mind condition:
Things like - Don't think you can be right with God yet have ought with
a brother,
A mindset of lust is adultry, If something in you is wrong before God -
Work it out.
Give to those in need - up and be on, Love your enemies &
bless those that persecute you.
( He’s telling us - Aim for the high mark of perfection, that we may
Glorify our Father in Heaven.)
Remember :
In {Mt 5:17} Jesus siad that he came not
to abolish but to fulfil the
Law.
In {Gal 5:14} Jesus teaches that the way
of “Love” brings the Law to
fulfilment.
He taught this enormously important truth “ A heart & mind of Love”
on this hill here in Galilee.
So to be a “Truly Blessed” Christian is not only receiving
the free
gift of salvation in Jesus.
But to have the mind and heart of Christ where by we Glorify God our
Father. Amen
